Dawn of the Intel Mac

We love the web.

Intel Core DuoApple’s Intel product line dropped today, fulfilling the prophecies spun by Mac rumor mongers all over the internet. Intel’s Core Duo processors promise to boost performance by 2 to 4 times, if you believe the industrial-strength hype machine that powers Apple marketing. I’m pretty psyched about the performance gains, even if they’re not as substantial as Apple promises.

Bringing Mac hardware into the high-performance arena is going to be a titanic step forward for OSX. We all know that even on a G5, OSX is a little more sluggish than we’d like. It’s time to throw off the shackles of an obsolete processor line, to provide our favorite operating system an environment in which it can flourish.

It’s time to resize Safari windows smoothly.

So what do you guys think? To me this is a sign that the Mac is ramping up to grab more market share than ever. It’ll be a long time until we see 11%, but Intel Macs should level the playing field a fair bit!

I’m also interested in the ability for these new machines to dual boot into either OS X or Windows. Could it finally be time to have one machine to do it all?

Well, reports are rolling in from more and more credible sources that there won’t be any specific blocks that prevent users from dual booting, so it certainly seems likely these will be true multi-OS machines. Of course I’ll believe that when I actually see it with my own eyes, but things are sounding pretty good right now.

I can’t believe how cool the MagSafe powercord is: that’s an improvement the portable computing scene has been needing for years!

well though since they boot with the new intel efi instead of a traditional bios, XP is not supported, 64bit one is, but the CPU is only 32 so that does nothing. Meaning that we’ll have to download a beta copy of vista in order to have windows on our macbooks. I seriously am setting out to get one this year, and i agree that the magsafe looks hot, couldn’t stand how often the regular connector would pop out, get bent, and just not work.
