A Comment on Comment Spam

We love the web.

Can I just say that of all the foul, underhanded marketing on the internet, blog comment spam has got to rank right up there as one of the worst. Not only is it unsolicited advertising, but it’s invading a personal realm that bloggers are sharing with their friends, family, and colleagues.

Luckily, content management developers like those behind Wordpress detest this practice just as much as I, which is why they’re integrating powerful technologies such as Akismet into their software. Even with Akismet’s commendable spam-killing capabilities though, we’ve still been having some underhanded comments slip through the cracks.

Hopefully it’s not too big of an inconvience, as really all we can do is continue to kill off any spam we find. Of course we’ll keep dreaming of a future where all spamers, be they emailers or commenters, are keel-hauled in a river of boiling oil.

Boiling oil, and robot space-piranah.

Have you already tried wp-gatekeeper by Eric Meyer? Works really great on my blog , which means, that I had not a single spam comment since I’ve installed it. It’s basically a little quiz where you can ask your users a question with every comment (these questions can be defined) and only if the user answers correctly the comment will show up :)

Hmm, interesting! Sort of like captcha or human validation. I’ll check it out!

[…] To piggy-back off the post over @ Crashpod, I’ve been receiving a ton of comment spam the past two days. Well over the accepted level of spam comments have been sent my way. All spam, all annoying. […]

I can’t use CAPTCHA or wp-gatekeeper. My readers get really pissy about having posted for years without it. Akismet gets 98% and that’s good enough for me. What really irks me is how good the spammers are getting. I received several comments one day, each one with the names of my regular commenters, but the body of each comment was mortgage spam. Akismet was not fooled, thankfully. ;)

It’s also strange how the spammers will pick up on a particular post: lately we’ve been getting a couple posts a day on the “welcome to Crashpod 4.0″ post, even though it’s a couple months old.

Oh well, turning off comments on a per post basis does the trick.

You might want to try auto comment shut off:

Ahh, very intersting: that may be a good solution!

I use auto comment shut off too. It really helps as most posts that are targeted are over 30 days old. You might want to look at that post to see if you wrote any words that spammers might want to be aligned with. Case in point, when I make a dick joke, that post will get spammed within a week.
