Top 5 Leaders of the Internet Zeitgeist I Dug Up On Wikipedia

We love the web.

    Wikipedia

  1. Kevin Rose
  2. Amanda Congdon
  3. Matt Mullenweg Alex Albrecht
  4. Cmdr Taco
  5. John C. Dvorak

John C. Dvorak was a tough choice for this, cause lord knows I hate that son of a @#$%. Still, one can’t deny the veritable typhoons of controversy his often outrageous predictions and inane babbling produce. What heros of internet culture can you dig up?

Dvorak is a breath of fresh air among all the other fanboys that blog and podcast about tech. Some people are put off by his brash tone but it’s nice to see some skepticism in the room admist all the pie-eyed love fests for each new piece of technology that is released. The difference is that he is an actual reporter and has the education and experience to really analyze what he is being fed.

I think I would agree with your list with the exception of Alex Albrecht. Dell commercials, getting drunk during episodes of Diggnation and Ctrl+Alt+Chicken? I just don’t see him contributing much of anything important. He is like Robin to Kevin Rose’s Batman.

Yeah, actually I’d have to agree with that. So Mr. Albrecht, you’ve been dumped in favor for Sir Mullenweg, creator of the blogging software package WordPress!

As for Dvorak? Still a punk.

There is no evidence that people want to use these things.

Classic. Thank you Ryan and Wikipedia.

I can’t seem to get my hosting company to enable my mysql db.

Think an 8M line is good enough to host my crappy website?

I would also submit that Leo Laporte is a *huge* mogul in the development of new media. According to Wikipedia, the weekly TWIT podcast now has over 250,000 downloads per week. In addition, Laporte is responsible for a cadre of other important and ground breaking tech news shows including Security Now! with Steve Gibson, Mac Break (the first HD podcast), and Inside the Net-a podcast covering the latest development in web2.0. We are watching the birth of a brand new network and it’s all headed by Laporte.

Again, this is a guy who was a professional broadcaster for a number of years so he knows how to do this stuff and do it well. I think that when the buzz dies down about everyone being able to blog and podcast etc, we will start to see the wheat seperated from the chaff in this area.

I would also submit that the Newsvine guys (Mike Davidson, Calvin Tang) deserve mention for helping to drive the new media. Though the readership (and thus content) has been leaning a bit heavily to the left, Newsvine represents a new exciting source for news on the web. They just have to be careful to not become another Huffington Post.
