Gears of War

Epic Game’s massively hyped Xbox 360 title Gears of War dropped this week, with the majority of reviews in agreement that for once, a game has actually lived up to the hype surrounding its launch. I’ve played through the first chapter now, back to back with my valiant squad mate Sonic Heaven, and I have to say I agree.

Comparing Gears to other games out there is a difficult feat. At its most fundamental Gears is a tactical action game that focuses on using cover to do battle with hiedous, subterrainian monsters that, in typical monster fashion, are out to destroy the human race. But it’s the way that Epic went above and beyond what we’ve seen in tactical shooters in the past, the gameplay, the graphics, the insane amount of gore that makes Gears of War so instantly memorable, and so thoroughly enjoyable. Also, did I mention the chainsaw bayonet?

Chainsaw. Bayonet.

I haven’t gotten this game yet because I wanted to see if the game lived up to all the hype. My buddy felt that it was necessary to text me at 9 a.m. to tell me to get the game. I think I am starting to get convinced that maybe I should pick this up instead of Rainbow 6: Las Vegas.

Would that be a good decision?

Picking between one, that’s a tough decision. Gears is a great game, and it’s really unlike anything I’ve played before. It’s been a long time since I’ve had as much edge of my seat fun. However, after playing through the demo of RB6 that game could be just as good if not better. The cover system seems to be a bit more tweaked and easy to use. I’d say go for GoW if you want over the top SciFi, go for RB6 if you want more realistic, but best option is go for both!

Yup, I agree: if you like realistic weapons and gear, then RB6 looks like it’s going to a ton of fun. If you’re into sci-fi and lumberjacking, than Gears’ pitched gun battles and chainsawination will be really appealing.

Best course of action though, is to bring both home and decide for yourself which one wins!

Damn I was really that the option of buying both wouldn’t come up!! I guess there is no way around it! I will be heading to the gaming store tonight.

How is the online play?

Really hoping that is….missed a word in there!

The online play is really interesting: if you like counterstrike style gaming, where you only have 1 life per round, it’s very satisfying. I’m more of a Halo fan myself, so sometimes I get bummed when I die early on and have to sit the round out, but it definitely teaches you to keep your head down!

Yeah I’m not sure how much I’ll like that, because I definitely prefer the Halo style play. But I’ll give anything a try, and it seems that this game is worth the type. So on that note, there goes my weekend!

In other news, GOOD LORD. I can vouch for the limited availability of the game: the gamestop I reserved at only got 10 copies in on the 8th. But beating a minor just to secure your copy? Insanity.

OK, I just finished CoD3 to which I say don’t worry about it, its OK, yet didn’t deliver as hyped. So I ordered GoW and it should be here tomorrow. Then we shall see, online co-op looks like a great feature, finally on a seemingly better than decent game unlike PDZ. catch you online
