Looks like Facebook may be launching an iPhone specific version of their successful webapp, if you believe the folks over at mashable. Too early to tell if this is a hoax or not in my opinion, but I hope it’s real: I’m no huge Facebook fan, but I am a fan of seeing what other developers come up with for iPhone interfaces.
As a web standards developer, I still have some qualms about going back to old fashioned browser detection, but I’m hoping this time around the industry will keep the the specter of browser code forking under control, and use it as a tool only when really necessary.

Our Blogsmith sites do a very simple method of browser detection. It ends up as a two-way fork: you’re either a mobile client or not. So far, the only guy that doesn’t play ball is the Sony PSP, but it actually displays the full versions fairly well.
Unfortunately, the iPhone doesn’t answer as mobile, but from what I understand it sends out its own specific header. So things shouldn’t be too bad. But I agree that it’s a slippery slope: what happens after that when Nokia et al come out with their killer device?
I can confirm that it’s live, and pretty sweet. I’m definitely a Facebook user, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t use it on the go. It looks pretty nice though……consider it bookmarked!
@Mike: You bring up a good point - once we start getting other next gen mobile devices, like HTPCs and Palm’s Folio, all of which will have different screen resolutions and aspect ratios, this could all get very shakey. Interesting to hear that the iPhone doesn’t identify itself as a mobile device, i’ll have to take a look!
Also, hot on the heels of myspace is Netvibes, with their own iPhone layout:
