about crashpod

Crashpod’s name was called into being during the birth of the blogosphere, some time in the distant year two thousand aught three. Like so many sites at the time, Crashpod’s name found traction in the middle ground between a domain that sounds cool and memorable, and a domain that hadn’t been snapped up by deceitful domain name squatters. While not a reference to any concrete subject matter in particular, we like to think that the very inclusion of the now tech-oriented term “pod” lends credibility to our general focus on subject matter based on hardware and software technology.

Besides giving us the chance to talk about our favorite technologies and the comings and goings of the industries they occupy, Crashpod has the added benefit of encouraging us simply to write. It may seem like a minor benefit, but with the coming ubiquity of user generated content, thoughts and opinions output by everyday citizens rather than processed statements by large media bodies, Crashpod provides us the chance to hone our capacity to express ourselves to the utmost of our ability in this new communication landscape.

the technology

Platform: Wordpress
First off, major credit to all the folks that pour their hearts into the Wordpress publishing platform: it's a fantastic environment to work in, and it never ceases to amaze us how far it can be extended.
Theme: Greenstroke
Crashpod's theme was built from the ground up by Ryan Mears. Huge props to Mark James, whose silk icons always find their way into his work.
Plugin: Ready Contact Form
Encouraging users to get in touch with us while avoiding a torrent of spam has always been an important goal. One of the best solutions we've seen is the Ready Contact Form, a nicely customizable and secure contact form plugin that makes sure we don't have to sort through an inbox full of viagra and cigarette advertisements.
Plugin: Extreme Video
It's always fun to post an occasional youtube video that our audience can watch right here on crashpod, fortunately Ross Gerbasi's Extreme Video Plugin let's us do just that!
Plugin: WP-PageNavi
Somehow search results just don't look quite right without the typical numbered page navigation. Lester Chan's WP-PageNavi plugin lets us provide search results functionality that are instantly recognizable to the user.
External: Destinations
Crashpod uses the excellent bookmarking service ma.gnolia to store our destinations. We fetch them with a simple inline javascript, ensuring that our as soon as we submit a new bookmark it's available in the destinations sidebar.
